6-23-2004 Klondike Kates, (302) 737-6100, 158 E. Main Street, Newark, DE
Strengths: Decent food for a student bar, usually. The steak was as good as that cut of meat could be.
Service: Service was below average. When it was brought to the server's attention that the caserole hadn't been heated properly, and was still cold, her solution was to tell the cook. She promptly reported back to me that she had told the cook. It never occurred to her to offer to have the problem fixed, or to make an adjustment on the check.
Could use Improvement: See above.
Turn Off's: A minor fly problem exists.
Handicap Accessibility: Poor.

Lone Star Steakhouse, 113 S. duPont Highway, New Castle, DE 19720 302-322-3854
Strengths: Tonight, I can't think of any.
Service: Service was fine on this occasion.
Could use Improvement: See Below...
Turn Off’s: I am writing this very quickly after having eaten my meal from Lone Star for several reasons. First, I want to jot these thoughts down while they are fresh in my mind. Secondly, I fear that I may become violently ill, and I want to document the evening while I am still able. On both of my last two visits, my favorite steak (the cajun ribeye) has been cooked and served to me well done, rather than medium rare as I had requested. On each such occasion I have sent it back and a manager returns with a properly cooked steak of greater size, and an apology. Tonight however, the traditional cajun spices had been supplemented with a different flavoring. It vividly brought forward images in my mind of the steak having been tenderized under the boot of a cook who had recently been outside on a smoke break. I still feel ill just thinking about it. It seems that Lone Star has been suffering from the competition of the Texas Roadhouse and Bugaboo Creek. Lone Star is no longer on my approved list. What a shame.
Handicap Accessibility: Good.
Parking: Good.

TGI Fridays, 650 South College Ave.,Newark, DE 19713 (302) 737-3700
(302) 737-9177 (FAX)
Strengths: Reasonably stable good menu.
Service: Service was acceptable on this occasion.
Could use Improvement: I ordered a medium rare steak, and received a well done steak.
Turn Off’s: The server rushed into the parking lot to mistakenly accuse me of taking her pen, in front of my guests. I had left her pen on the table. The dim lights interfered with her ability to see it. I gave her an extra pen and wished her well.

Korean Kahl-Bee Restaurant, 2011 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805 (Elsmere) (302) 998-4310
Strengths: A Saturday night run for take-out was converted into a delightful sit down meal. We were very pleased with the quality of the food, the comfort of the establishment.
Service: Service was very nice (Some servers are not entirely bi-lingual, though. Don't order rice tea unless you know what you are getting. Soda is a safe bet.).
Could use Improvement: I tried to go back again on Sunday (yes, they were that good), but they are closed on Sundays. Rats!

Iron Hill Brewery, 147 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19711, (302) 266-9000.
Strengths: We went for their Sunday evening Prime Rib Special. For $15.95, you get a 14 oz. prime rib, baked potato, salad, vegetable and a glass of wine or a pint of beer. It was well worth it. As usual, the brewery doesn't disappoint.
Service: Good, prompt and courteous.
Could use Improvement: Not at this time.

Handicap Accessibility: Very Good.
Parking: Plenty in the rear of the restaurant as well as on Main Street

Stonewalls , Banner Elk, NC 828-898-5550
Strengths: Overall, the food was good. There aren't millions of choices of places to eat in Banner Elk, though. Steaks are the preferred menu item.
Service: OK.
Could use Improvement: The lobster bisque was bad... real bad. They would have done much better with it if they had bought canned. Note to self: when in a steak house far from the sea, don't order seafood.
Turn Off’s: None.

Parking: Poor, but try the post office parking lot (when they are closed) .
